Portland, ME [December 22, 2009] The Very Reverend Doctor Benjamin Shambaugh, Senior Pastor of St. Luke's Cathedral in Portland, Maine, has been appointed to the Preble Street Board of Directors.
The Dean of St. Luke's since 2005, Reverend Shambaugh has served in churches in Illinois, Maryland, and Paris, France and has been responsible for developing programs for youth, organizing emergency food programs, creating cross-cultural conferences, and overseeing a humanitarian outreach program.
At St. Luke's Reverend Shambaugh has partnered with the faith community to provide 20,000 meals a year through the St. Luke's Soup Kitchen and serve 10,000 clients at the St. Elizabeth's "essentials" pantry, sponsored the first Spanish-speaking congregation in the diocese and lead a Portland-wide youth ministry. This past July St. Luke's and its soup kitchen affiliates merged their efforts into Preble Street as part of Preble Street's new Maine Hunger Initiative.
Reverend Shambaugh earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Seabury Western Seminary and currently serves as adjunct faculty at Bangor Theological Seminary.
Preble Street, a Portland-based agency, is the 24/365 service hub for homeless and hungry youth, adults, and families and works collaboratively to provide accessible, barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty; and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
