In the tradition of the common good so important to Bowdoin College, alumni from six decades gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Preble Street Joe Kreisler Teen Shelter on December 11, 2012.

Preble Street is a nonprofit in Portland that offers services to the homeless, including drop-in centers, soup kitchens, a food pantry, shelters, social work services and supported housing. The new teen shelter has 24 beds, eight more than the shelter it replaced, as well as additional staff and more private space for studying and counseling.

Bowdoin is well represented at Preble Street. Alumni include Executive Director Mark Swann ’84, Board President Maurice "Cito" Selinger ’81, Board Treasurer Charlie Roscoe ’66 and caseworker Andrew Bove ’07. The warm and welcoming new shelter was designed by architect Jim Sterling ’72 who also serves on the Preble Street board.
