In commemoration of Preble Street Maine Hunger Initiative’s 14th anniversary and its long history of collaborating with partners to end hunger in Maine, please lend your voice and support to ensure the passage of significant anti-hunger legislation!
LD 174: An Act To Implement the Recommendations of the Ending Hunger by 2030 Advisory Group will help ensure all Mainers have consistent access to a variety of culturally appropriate food by increasing access and participation in federal nutrition programs. If passed, the bill would also work to address the root causes of hunger and food insecurity by fostering economic stability, providing safe and healthy places to live, addressing emotional and social wellbeing, eliminating health disparities, and preparing people for academic and employment success.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated hunger and food insecurity in Maine. People are struggling to purchase a variety of food for themselves and their families. Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color in Maine face even higher rates of hunger and food insecurity. This legislation is needed to address these disproportionate impacts and further racial equity in our state.
